FAQs

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?

Hypnotherapy works by helping you access a focused, relaxed state of awareness, often called trance or hypnosis, where your mind is more open to positive suggestions. In Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, we use this state to support new, healthier thought patterns and behaviours. It’s based on neuroscience and encourages neuroplasticity, your brain’s natural ability to change. By combining talking therapy with hypnosis, we help you move forward with calm, confidence, and positivity.

Is Hypnotherapy Regulated?

In the UK, hypnotherapy, counselling, and psychotherapy are not subject to statutory regulation. However, like counselling and psychotherapy, hypnotherapists can choose to follow strict ethical guidelines by completing accredited training and joining professional associations. This provides you as a client with confidence in the hypnotherapist’s qualifications and competence, as well as access to a complaints process if necessary.

To become accredited in this way, a hypnotherapist must meet specific education, training, and experience requirements. This includes committing to a set number of hours of professional supervision, ongoing training, and adhering to a code of conduct, which I strictly follow.

While many self-accredited or unaccredited courses exist, the Hypnotherapy Practitioner Diploma (HPD) is a nationally recognized qualification, benchmarked against Ofqual standards and accredited by the NCFE, which I have successfully achieved. This ensures that the qualification is credible and increasingly accepted by traditional medicine and health insurance providers.

Is Hypnotherapy Safe?

Yes, hypnotherapy is safe. It’s a natural process that uses a deeply relaxed state to help you focus your mind and make positive changes. You remain fully in control throughout the session, you can move, speak, and even open your eyes at any time. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is gentle and future-focused, meaning it doesn’t involve reliving past trauma. Instead, it helps you build confidence, reduce stress, and move forward in a calm, empowering way. Many people find the experience deeply relaxing and enjoyable.

Is It Like Stage Hypnosis?

No, clinical hypnotherapy is a professional therapy and not to be confused with stage or TV entertainment. You will be in full control and you will be aware of everything that is going on throughout the session.

Hypnotherapy is a safe, calming and relaxing experience and once you trust that your therapist is a friendly, experienced professional with your best interests in mind, most people are able to relax, take time for themselves, and enjoy the process and its results.

Can I Get Stuck In Trance?

No, because you are aware of what is happening around you, you can choose to come out of a trance at any time. You are not unconscious at any point; you are simply in a relaxed state that you can come out of at any time. It’s important to remember that you will be in full control.

Can You Make Me Do Something I Don’t Want to?

No, you remain fully aware during hypnosis and in control of your actions. The therapist cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do.

How Many Sessions Will I Need and How Often?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a brief therapy, meaning results are often quicker than with other methods, although each case is unique. For long-lasting results, weekly sessions are recommended at first to build momentum and track progress, I normally suggest for the first 4 weeks. As improvements are made, the frequency of sessions can be reduced. On average, clients attend 8-12 sessions, though this may vary based on individual needs, which will be discussed during the initial consultation. Results vary from person to person and is also dependant on client commitment.

How Do I Start?

The best starting point is the initial consultation. This is a valuable opportunity for you to learn more about the therapy and for us to meet. During the consultation, I will ask some basic questions to understand your needs and goals.

I will also explain, how the process works and the science behind it. You’re welcome to bring any questions you may have. By the end of the consultation, you’ll have a clearer understanding of what to expect from future sessions. There is no obligation to proceed with therapy after the consultation.
